CALHOUN, Ga. – The Gordon County Schools Board of Education approved the appointment of new leadership on Monday evening. A 16-year educator, Tara Green was appointed to serve as the Principal of W.L. Swain Elementary School. The appointment will become effective with the 2022-23 school year.
Green succeeds Dr. Elizabeth Anderson who will retire at the end of the current academic year. Dr. Anderson has been the Principal of W.L. Swain Elementary since 2014, where Green has served as an Assistant Principal since 2020.
“Mrs. Green has been an integral part of our school for years. She is a strong instructional leader who keenly understands the educational needs of our students,” said Dr. Elizabeth Anderson. “Mrs. Green’s passion for our Swain community assures me I am leaving Swain in loving, capable hands.”
Green, who began her teaching career in 2006, joined the Gordon County Schools system in 2015 as a classroom and gifted resource teacher. During her education career Mrs. Green has participated as part of the Local School Governing Council, the Better Seekers team, served as an Instructional Lead Technology Teacher and in 2011 was chosen as the Fairyland Elementary Teacher of the Year for Walker County Schools, in addition to her current role serving as an Assistant Principal.
“Working with the students, staff, and parents at Swain has been life changing. I have witnessed the power of unity and the power of perseverance. Swain Elementary is truly a special place,” said Green. “I am humbled and excited for this new chapter, and I look forward to serving the Swain staff, students, and community in my new capacity”.
Mrs. Green holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Early Childhood Education from Dalton State College, a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of West Georgia, a Specialist Degree in Instruction and Curriculum from Piedmont College and a Tier 1 Leadership Endorsement from Piedmont College.
Green is a long-time resident of Gordon County. Her husband, Billy, is a Lieutenant at Calhoun Fire Department. They share two daughters: Katlyne Green, a sophomore at the University of Georgia and Sophie Green, a fourth-grade student at W. L. Swain Elementary School.
