GORDON COUNTY, GA – Gordon County Schools Nutrition Department (GCSN) has achieved prestigious recognition at the state level for its dedication to utilizing Georgia Grown products in school meals, expanding students' culinary horizons, and integrating cooking and gardening activities into the curriculum.
The School Nutrition Department at GCS, who provided nearly 1.35 million meals last school year, has clinched the notable Golden Radish Award from the Georgia Department of Education School Nutrition Division. This marks the third occasion that the GCS School Nutrition Department has garnered this accolade.
Winning the Golden Radish Award is a testament to GCSN's commitment to sourcing and incorporating fresh, locally grown produce and ingredients into school meals, as well as its active advocacy for the importance of farm-to-school food sourcing and engagement in school garden initiatives. The criteria for this award were thoughtfully developed in collaboration with the Georgia Department of Education School Nutrition Division, Georgia Department of Agriculture, University of Georgia Extension, and Georgia Department of Public Health.
Gordon County Schools Nutrition Director Nicole Head was honored with the award during the School Nutrition Director's Conference in Athens, Georgia, on October 17th. The award was presented by Georgia Superintendent of Schools Richard Woods and other esteemed state leaders.
