HEADSHOT of ALICE MASHBURN

CALHOUN, GA. – Gordon County Schools Superintendent, Dr. Kimberly Fraker, announced her retirement effective at the end of August 2023.

“I appreciate the opportunity given to me by the board of education to lead Gordon County Schools, and I am extremely proud of the work we have accomplished together,” said Fraker. “I can proudly say GCS is stronger today because of the work we have done over the past four years. The accomplishments are many including an increased system of communication with input from teachers, parents and students, improved facilities, a focus on growing our leaders from within, enhanced school safety and solid partnerships with local businesses as well as other government entities.”

Dr. Fraker intends to continue her service to others and her advocacy for public education in a manner that will afford her more time with family and allow the pursuit of additional interests.

The Gordon County Board of Education immediately announced the intent to appoint Gordon County Schools Assistant Superintendent, Alice Mashburn, as the next Superintendent of the school system. The Board of Education must wait 14 days before taking final action. A vote regarding this appointment will be held at a called meeting on June 26.

This decision is a natural progression as GCS has made leadership development within the school system a priority over the past few years.

“I would like to thank you, Dr. Fraker, for everything that you have done for Gordon County Schools. Under your leadership, our system has improved tremendously. You guided us through COVID and accomplished many things. One way to judge a leader is to look at our system when you arrived and look at it now, our system is now in much better condition. You will be missed, and I hope that you enjoy your well-deserved retirement,” shared Charlie Walraven, Chair of the GCS Board of Education. “It is also my honor to announce that Assistant Superintendent Alice Mashburn is being appointed Superintendent of Gordon County Schools. Ms. Mashburn has been with Gordon County School for 23 years and is extremely qualified for the position. The BOE is looking forward to working with Ms. Mashburn for many years to come.”

Alice Mashburn was named the Assistant Superintendent in December 2019 and has been with Gordon County Schools since 2000. With 23 years in public education, Mashburn has held a variety of positions including, Teacher, Media Specialist, Graduation Coach, Data Coordinator, Assistant Principal, Director of Technology, and Director of Human Resources; giving her a wealth of knowledge and experience and preparing her for the role of Superintendent.

“I am deeply honored to be given the opportunity to lead and serve Gordon County Schools. Our school system has a long-standing tradition of academic excellence, the foundation of which is the commitment from our staff, students and community” shared Mashburn. “My vision is to continue to cultivate a safe, welcoming, and academically challenging environment built on trust and respect where students thrive. I look forward to working alongside our staff, students, parents and community members.”
